How Real Flowers and Leaves Become Botanical Jewellery

A real flower or leaf carries details that a manufactured motif cannot repeat: a vein that bends slightly off-centre, a petal that deepens at the edge, or a small mark left by weather and growth. Turning that material into botanical jewellery is therefore not a matter of making nature look perfectly uniform. It is a process of preserving what is already individual, then designing around it.

The exact sequence varies with the plant and the design, but the principle remains the same: the botanical element leads the piece. 1. Selecting a botanical specimen

The first decision is not simply whether a flower is attractive. A specimen also needs a form that can survive preservation and work at jewellery scale. The studio considers the outline, thickness, colour, texture and condition of each flower or leaf. Some petals hold a sculptural curve; others become translucent. Some leaves reveal strong veins once placed against clear resin, while others are valued for an irregular edge or a gradual shift in green.

Selection also means accepting natural variation. Two flowers from the same plant can differ in size, shade and symmetry. Leaves gathered at different points in a season may carry different tones. These differences are not corrected into artificial sameness; they become part of the final composition.

2. Drying or preserving the plant material

Fresh plant material contains moisture and is too unstable to place directly into a lasting jewellery setting. It must first be carefully dried or otherwise preserved. The method and timing depend on the botanical itself, as well as humidity, colour and structure. A thick orchid petal behaves differently from a fine hydrangea floret, and a leaf with a firm network of veins requires different handling from a soft bloom.

This stage is intentionally slow. Rushing it can distort the specimen or trap unwanted moisture. Even with careful preparation, real botanicals may continue to age gradually after preservation. Botanical jewellery records a living material at a particular moment; it does not turn it into an industrially identical or permanently unchanging object.

3. Designing around the flower

Once prepared, each specimen is assessed again. The maker studies its strongest angle, colour balance and natural movement before deciding how it should sit in the piece. Composition may involve a single petal, a small cluster, a radiating group of leaves or a botanical element combined with pearls, chain, shells, stones or metal findings.

Different flowers invite different design decisions. The sculptural shapes in the Orchid Chapter often work as expressive focal points, while the layered florets in the Hydrangea Chapter lend themselves to softer clusters and shifting colour. Rather than forcing both flowers into the same template, the design responds to their distinct structures.

4. Reading the character of real leaves

Leaves can appear simple from a distance, but close viewing reveals a complex surface. Veins, serrated margins, lobes and changes in tone all influence how a preserved leaf catches light. Botanical identification also adds meaning: Boston ivy, Japanese hop, Chinese chaste tree, paper mulberry and Chinese mugwort each have a recognisable form and botanical history.

5. Positioning and encapsulating in resin

Where resin is used, the prepared botanical is positioned by hand and encapsulated or coated according to the design. This is a careful stage because the flower or leaf can shift, float or hold tiny pockets of air. The maker works to protect the specimen while keeping its most important details visible.

Small bubbles, subtle surface texture, differences in transparency and slight changes in placement can occur in handmade resin work. They are evaluated during finishing, but a handmade botanical piece should not be expected to look like an injection-moulded plastic object. Its individuality comes from both the natural material and the hand process.

6. Curing, finishing and edge work

The resin must be allowed to cure fully before the piece is finished. Edges are then checked and refined, surfaces are inspected, and the botanical setting is prepared for assembly. Depending on the design, this may involve drilling, joining, adding a bezel or edge detail, or connecting the botanical element to a chain, ring base, earring finding or brooch mechanism.

Finishing is not only cosmetic. It also helps ensure that the piece sits comfortably, hangs correctly and can be handled without unnecessary pressure on the preserved plant material.

7. Assembly with complementary materials

A finished Terra Decode piece may combine preserved botanicals and resin with plated metal, sterling silver, gold-filled findings, freshwater pearls, imitation pearls, shells, stones or other carefully selected details. The materials vary by design, so the individual product description remains the most accurate guide to a particular piece.

Assembly brings the composition into balance. A pearl drop may add movement beneath a leaf; a fine chain may keep attention on an orchid; a metal edge may trace an irregular botanical outline. These additions support the specimen rather than replacing it.

8. Final inspection and handmade variation

Before a piece is completed, the setting, joins, findings and overall finish are inspected. Product photographs provide a close representation of the design, but the botanical in the piece received will have its own shape, shade and placement. This is especially noticeable in small-batch work, where seasonal material availability can make an exact repeat impossible.

That variation is not a failure to reproduce the photograph. It is evidence that the jewellery contains a real flower or leaf rather than a printed or factory-cast imitation.
